It can be so scary those first couple of times when you finally venture forth to the make-up counter. I spend a great deal of time coaching my sissies and transwomen on how to be brave and step firmly up to the counter and ask for help from the (usually) very kind salesperson.
Stepping Out
Will you dress? Will you wear lip gloss? Will you just wear panties under your clothes to make you feel more feminine? Any and all of them are perfect; whatever makes you feel good and strong. Don’t even give a second thought if someone looks at you (or stares at you). Just be yourself!
I know how nerve-wracking it can be as you drive to the mall, but just breathe and know the folks at the make-up counter are almost always used to sissies or transwomen coming in and asking for help. You will not be the first one standing in front of them. I promise.
So you pick the store you want to go to and there you are, standing in front of it. Finally. Your stomach might be in knots, but no one but you will know that. Take a deep breath and step over the threshold! Get on in there!
Introducing Yourself
Some people wonder if they need to come out to the salesperson… and that is totally up to you. If it makes you feel more comfortable to let the person know you are trans, then go for it. I will tell you, though, that you do not need to actually verbalize your gender to them; they will know from your first question.
Maybe you have a list of things you wanted to buy, or at least try out. Maybe you are just going in cold, not having a clue what you want. Either one is perfectly fine! The salesperson will totally help you at the make-up counter.
Bag of Goodies
Before you know it, you will have a delightful bag of make-up to take home and try out, practicing putting it on over and over again. Happily, YouTube has about a million “How-To Put On Make-Up” videos that you can watch and learn from.
