Fabulous 40’s and 50’s Fashion
I don’t know about you ladies, but when it comes to movies, even the worst of them can entertain me, if the costumes are fabulous. Maybe that’s why I watch so many from the 40’s and 50’s. In my opinion, those were the last great eras of fashion, where the styles of the day, were at times, the stars of the films.
The very finest designers, many trained in the world of Haute couture, are recognized names in credits. Edith Head, Hubert de Givenchy, and Gilbert Adrian may have designed for the characters of a movie, but their styles carried over into the lives and closets of four generations of Fashionistas.
The Women
Here’s one of my Top 10 that is perfect for a lazy Saturday–lounging on the divan, looking divine in your satin and lace. The Women, set in the world of the upper-class, is a favorite of mine and a great example of an Adrian extravaganza of never-ending costume changes and over the top designs.
Ensembles worn by Joan Crawford and Rosalind might get close to the line of ridiculous, but they reflected the mode of dress that was most popular at time. With so many amazing hats, shoes, gloves and furs, you can really see how important accessories were to the well-dressed lady. Not to be missed is the fashion show, worked side-ways into the plot. It is a Grand Parade of 1938 couture that was true to the industry, but still too trendy to make it down the runway for a 2nd season.
