What You Will Need for Your Sissy Manicure

Here’s a list of suggested manicure tools for your DIY Sissy manicure. At the very least you’ll need nail polish remover, Q-tips or cotton balls, a file, nail clipper and nail polish. The rest is aspirational but you may already have many of these:

Nail-polish remover and cotton swabs or pads
Nail clippers
Emery board and nail buffer (nail buffer is optional).
Cuticle pusher/Orange stick
Callous/cuticle remover
Hand/nail moisturizer
Base coat
Nail polish
Clear topcoat

First Things First

Start by removing any existing nail polish. Acetone remover takes off the polish much quicker but it’s hard on your nails. Non-acetone is gentler but it takes longer to get the polish off and the scrubbing can be worse for your nails and skin. It’s really a matter of preference about which to use. Make sure to get any remaining polish on the sides of your nails with a Qtips or a cotton pad.

Shape Your Nails

Clip your nails if they’re too long and then gently file them into shape. Try to use a one-way motion rather than filing both ways which will fray your nails. Avoid metal or extremely coarse nail files and choose an emery board which is gentler on your nails than other filing boards. Smooth the tops and sides of the nails with a buffer to ensure an even surface, Soaking the cuticle before trimming is crucial, but over-soaking actually damages skin and nails, so limit this step to three minutes or less.

Push Back Cuticles

Your cuticles protect your nails from bacteria so avoid cutting/nipping them, Instead use cuticle remover to prep your nails and then push back gently with a cuticle stick.

Exfoliate

Use an exfoliator on your hands and wrists to eliminate dead skin and help make your hands look younger. There are many versions on the market but you can always make your own with a couple of spoons of sugar (brown sugar is gentler) and a bit of olive oil. After you exfoliate, use the orange stick to gently clean away any dirt under your nails and wash your hands. A lot of tutorials will tell you to moisturize at this point, but if you do, you’ll have a layer of oil on your nails that will make applying the polish difficult. Wait and put moisture on your hands when the manicure is finished and the polish is dry.

Base Coat

A base coat will help protect your nails and keep the polish from chipping. Try to wait 2 minutes before applying the polish.

Polish

Load just enough polish on the brush to cover your nail. Start at the cuticle and stripe your nail 3 times: one down the middle and once on each side. Wait 2 minutes and apply another thin layer of polish. Sheer colors may need a third coat depending on the look you’re going for.

Top Coat

Using a top coat will significantly extend the life of your polish. Make sure to wait at least 2 minutes for your polish to dry so you don’t ruin your manicure.

A Word About Gels

You can use a gel polish that won’t require so many steps. Many women love gel polish because you can set it and forget it, but know that using a gel requires a toxic removal process that usually means a special trip to the nail salon. Doing it yourself is even more time consuming and will take the top layer of your nails off. I’m a fan of using regular polish, which will give you a beautiful look that’s easy to touch up.

Finishing Touches

You can wrap your orange stick with a bit of cotton from a cotton ball and carefully remove any excess polish mistakes you might have made. After your nails are thoroughly dry, maybe 20 minutes later or more, it’s nice to finish with a light nourishing oil or hand cream to give your hands a polished look.
